Saddle Making Highlights Paniolo Artisans Showcase in Waimea is sponsored by Paniolo Preservation Society (PPS) in partnership with the PPS Waimea Education Hui, and held at Kahilu Theatre. The Showcase will honor four of Hawaii’s master saddle makers and provide a venue for paniolo artisans from around the state to demonstrate, exhibit and share their skills, cultural values and unique practices and perspectives.

Coinciding with Hawaii Island Festival’s 34th Annual Paniolo Parade and Waimea Hoolaulea honoring the late beloved falsetto singer-storyteller Clyde “Kindy” Sproat, the Showcase is intended to recognize ranching as a viable, enduring tradition of Hawaii and to demonstrate saddle making as both a livelihood and venue for blending functional work with the highest level of artistic achievement.

Complementing the free exhibits, demonstrations and opportunities to talk-story with master artisans and paniolo practitioners will be the public viewing of a short film about saddle making created by Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School teachers in collaboration with members of the Waimea Education Hui – a group of educators and cultural resources affiliated with PPS.
